CSI/Mahlum

Robert W. Simmons, president of R.W. Simmons and Associates, was recently elected to Fellowship of the Construction Specifi cations Institute (CSI).

Robert W. Simmons , president of R.W. Simmons and Associates, was recently elected to Fellowship of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). Fellowship is the second highest honor CSI bestows to its members. Fellows are nominated by their colleagues and selected by CSI’s Jury of Fellows in recognition of their accomplishments in advancing construction technology, improving construction specifications, educating people in the construction industry or advancing the goals of the Institute.


Mahlum, a Northwest architecture firm, has named four architects as associate principals in its Seattle and Portland offices:

Mitch Kent, AIA , who received both his bachelor and master of architecture degrees from the University of Washington, has been with Mahlum for nearly 13 years. During that time he has focused on K-12 and higher education projects. He was project manager for Franklin Elementary--which has won local and national design awards--Rosa Parks Elementary, and the new Finn Hill Junior High, all part of the Lake Washington School District, as well as project manager for the new Issaquah High School.

Kent Olson, AIA , who graduated from University of Washington with a bachelor of arts in architecture, has focused primarily on healthcare in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and California in his 16 years with Mahlum. He has worked with such clients as the Santa Clara Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and St. Clare Hospital.

Kirk Haapala, AIA , earned his bachelor of science in architecture and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and has been an employee of Mahlum for 11 years. He has worked on projects for such educational clients as Oregon State University, Mt. Hood Community College, Linfield College and Western Oregon University. Linn-Benton Community College, University of California at Davis, University of Oregon and North Clackamas School District.


Erik Goodfriend, AIA , holds a bachelor of architecture from California Polytechnic State University and has nearly 25 years’ experience, 11 of them with Mahlum. His clients have included Providence Medical Group, Rogue Valley Medical Center, Oregon Health Sciences University, Kaiser Permanente, Swedish Medical Center and Salem Hospital. Goodfriend was project manager for the Rogue Valley Medical Center Patient Tower addition, which won the 2006 American Society of Hospital Engineering Vista Award. Recently he participated in a post-occupancy evaluation study of the Providence Newberg Hospital, the first LEED hospital in the country.
