Brett Hanson Appointed IAS Chair
Sparling project designer will
represent the Seattle Industry Applications Society chapter
at monthly Seattle Section IEEE meetings.
Sparling (Seattle) project designer Brett
Hanson was recently appointed chair of the Industry
Applications Society Seattle chapter for 2004. IAS is a division
of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,
a non-profit, technical professional association of more than
377,000 members in 150 countries.
As chair, Hanson will represent the IAS chapter at monthly
Seattle Section IEEE meetings and at the IEEE-IAS annual meeting
in Salt Lake City. He will also direct planning and coordination
of monthly technical and social meetings. Events on the 2004
IAS roster include presentations about power reliability,
facility commissioning, and a tour of a NW inverter technology
company.
Hanson served as IAS member-at-large, secretary, and vice-chairman
prior to assuming the role of committee chairman.

David Coffey, a former firefighter
and a fire alarm and low voltage services expert, has been
named a fire alarm specialist at Portland, Ore.'s Dynalectric
Co.
In his new position, Coffey will be responsible for providing
design and estimating services for fire alarm installations.
He has more than 25 years of experience in the design, inspection
and installation of fire alarm and suppression systems.

Richard Loo has joined Lorig
Associates of Seattle as project manager focusing on project
feasibility and design team management. Loo brings extensive
experience to Lorig in the construction design and project
management of student housing, townhomes and apartments, and
hospitality facilities.
Loo graduated from McGill University with a bachelor's degree
in Architecture, earned his certificate in construction management
from the University of Washington and is a LEED accredited
professional.

MulvannyG2 Architecture recently announced it has added 16
individuals to its Portland, Ore., staff. The staffing increase
is in response to a strategic reorganization the firm made
earlier this year to better serve the needs of their clientele.
Those joining MulvannyG2 include Kenneth
Roberts, associate; Richard
Shavey, senior technical architect; Randy
Sauer, project manager; Pearse
O'Moore, project manager; and Anastasia
(Stasi) Perrigo, project manager.
New job captains include Martin Segura,
Erica Ceder, Jamie
Varblow, Michael Payne
and Caryn Yamamoto. Architectural
technicians are Andrew Twyman,
Travis Olson, Victor
Duong, Casey McKenna,
Rashmi Urval and Maria
Ochoa.

Design and engineering firm Otak Inc. of Portland, Ore.,
recently hired three new employees.
Kay Van Sickel was appointed
to lead the firm's Transportation Business Group. Van Sickel
was formerly the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)
manager for District 1, which encompasses the Portland Metro
region and large areas east and west of the city.
Otak also hired In-Tae Lee,
a licensed structural engineer. Lee previously worked for
17 years with ODOT designing, engineering, inspecting and
managing bridge and transit projects throughout the state.
A professional engineer since 1986, Lee has managed, engineered,
designed and inspected structural projects in urban and rural
settings throughout Oregon, with a focus on bridge engineering.
David Berniker joined Otak's
Planning Business Group. He had previously worked as an urban
designer and planner for private firms and the City of Portland
Bureau of Planning. Berniker's urban design experience spans
a variety of projects, from leading visioning exercises for
the Portland Bureau of Planning and Portland Office of Transportation
to representing the city on an American Institute of Architecture
Urban Design Committee.

Triad Associates, a Kirkland, Wash., land development consulting
firm, recently promoted Jeff Cox,
director of site planning and landscape architecture, to vice-president.
Katherine Hilde has been hired
as a landscape designer.
Cox brings 21 years of experience working with land developers
and home builders to his new role. He is responsible for increasing
the firm's presence in the Puget Sound, as well as using his
design expertise to create livable communities for Triad's
clients. He is currently working on Shamrock, a low impact
development project in King County; and Stacy, an innovative
ordinance community in Kirkland for CamWest Development.
Hilde joins Triad Associates' site planning and landscape
architecture group with four years of industry experience.
She will help the group create residential communities and
landscape architecture designs. Hilde holds a Bachelor's Degree
in landscape architecture from Washington State University
and serves as a board member for the Friends of Seattle Olmsted
Parks.

Express Construction Company of Seattle has promoted John
J. Ryan, Jr. from carpenter foreman to project engineer.
Ryan has been with Express since 2000, recently working on
the Ballinger Gateway project and tenant improvement projects
such as W3 Data, Inc., Bella Drycleaners and Union restaurant.
During his tenure at Express, Ryan has worked on bid proposals,
contracts and contract modifications, drafted and modified
project budgets, and provided pre-construction cost estimating
services for proposed projects.

Emick Howard & Seibert, Inc., a Seattle architecture,
interior design, and strategic facility planning firm, recently
announced the addition of Curtis Bales,
AIA, NCARB as project manager for corporate and financial
projects.
Bales brings 25 years' experience in corporate and institutional
interior architecture. Past projects include work Boeing Commercial
Airplane Group headquarters, Port of Tacoma administrative
office building, Woodland Park Zoo Rainforest Café,
the Washington State Convention and Trade Center and others.

University Mechanical Contractors, Inc. of Mukilteo, Wash.,
recently welcomed Jim Dickson
to its sales team as an account executive. Dickson is a mechanical
engineer and holds an engineering degree from the University
of Washington. He has an extensive background in HVAC and
controls.
