Hanson Alaska LLC recently appointed Shane Ferrell as a civil designer. Ferrell holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University and while pursuing his education, served as a material coordinator and construction manager for a Class I Railroad. Ferrell currently is assisting with the conceptual design for the Port MacKenzie Rail Line Extension with the Alaska Railroad Corp.

Four architects have been named associate principals in Mahlum’s Seattle and Portland offices – Mitch Kent , AIA and Todd Olson, AIA in Portland; Kirk Haapala , AIA, LEED AP and Erik Goodfriend , AIA, LEED AP, in Seattle. Kent and Haapala will focus on education projects; Olson and Goodfriend on healthcare.

Mitch Kent has worked with Mahlum for 13 years, working with many Seattle-area education clients. He was project manager for Franklin Elementary, which has won numerous local and national design awards; Rosa Parks Elementary and the new Finn Hill Junior High, all part of the Lake Washington School District, as well as project manager for the new Issaquah High School.

Todd Olson has focused primarily on healthcare in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and California in his 16 years with Mahlum. He has worked with the Santa Clara Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center, St. Clare Hospital and Harborview. tal Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, Valley Medical Center, University of California, the University of Washington, Ketchikan General Hospital, Swedish Hospital, Veterans Administration and St. Francis Hospital.

Kirk Haapala has nearly 15 years of experience in architecture--11 with Mahlum--has co-authored white papers on promoting the 2030 Challenge within Higher Education, and he is a frequent speaker and panel participant on environmental responsibility in the design of higher education and student housing projects. Haapala has worked on projects for such educational clients as Oregon State University, Mt. Hood Community College, Linfield College, Western Oregon University, Linn-Benton Community College, University of California at Davis, University of Oregon and North Clackamas School District.

Erik Goodfriend has nearly 25 years’ experience, 11 of them with Mahlum. His clients have included Providence Medical Group, Rogue Valley Medical Center, Oregon Health Sciences University, Kaiser Permanente, Swedish Medical Center and Salem Hospital.
