Lighthouse Updated /Ashgrove

Ashgrove is expanding its import capacity in Portland with the purchase of terminal space on the Willamette River.

Lighthouse Facelift Helps Preserve Building Interior

Reedsport, Ore. - Restoration efforts at the Umpqua River Lighthouse included door and window replacement, many of which were broken and leaking. Experts say these projects are essential to preserving and protecting the future well-being of the historic lighthouse.

Jeld-Wen, Klamath Falls, Ore., installed 12 architecturally correct, energy efficient, double-hung wood windows to replace the previous aluminum windows, which Umpqua River Lighthouse officials speculate were installed in the early 1980s and were causing drafts and heat loss.

The original Umpqua River Lighthouse, built in 1857 near the mouth of the Umpqua River, was the first lighthouse in the Oregon territory. Built on a sandy flood plain, the lighthouse toppled in 1864 due to severe storm and flood conditions. In 1894 the second and current Umpqua River Lighthouse was built on its new site. The lighthouse is especially notable for its unique lantern design, one of only two in the world.

Today the Umpqua River Lighthouse remains one of Oregon's eight public working lighthouses.

Ashgrove to Increase Portland Cement Imports

Portland - Ash Grove Cement Co. recently purchased an import terminal facility from Goldendale Aluminum on the Willamette River in Portland that the company will use to supply its customers in the greater Northwest United States as well as some inland markets.

Ashgrove's adjacent terminal on North Port Center Way. Once operational, the combined facilities will have a total storage capacity of 72,000 tons, enabling Ashgrove to annually supply up to 800,000 tons of portland cement, the main ingredient in concrete. The terminal will be supplied by oceangoing vessels of handy max size. Ashgrove anticipates the new terminal facility will be distributing cement by Fall 2006. Along with cement distribution, Ashgrove will manage the distribution on behalf of Goldendale.
