Commission Honors Astronaut By Renaming Highway

SR 904 Renamed in Honor Of Fallen Astronaut

Olympia - The Washington State Transportation Commission passed a resolution to rename State Route 904 after Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson. The 20-mile stretch of highway forms a loop, connecting the community of Cheney, Wash., with Interstate 90 at exit 257 and exit 270.

Michael Anderson was part of the seven-member crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia, which broke up upon re-entry to the earth's atmosphere on Feb. 2. Anderson graduated from Cheney High School in 1977 and considered Spokane his home.

The proposal to rename the highway was presented by Dave Clinton, president of the West Plains Chamber of Commerce.
