Northwest 2004 ACEC Awards

Engineers Honor Outstanding Design

Top Projects Head to National Competitions
W&H Pacific won an award for a report evaluating the condition of bridges throughout the state of Oregon.

The annual Engineering Excellence awards competition, presented by American Council of Engineering Companies was held in January. Separate events were held in for Oregon and Washington members.

The event recognizes engineering projects which demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity.

In Oregon the award winners were:

GRI Geotechnical & Environmental Consultants for Oregon Health & Science University Patient Care.
Project of the Year
  • Parsons Brinckerhoff and David Evans and Associates, Inc. for Interstate Max Light Rail Extension.

The Washington ACEC chapter also announced its award winners recently. Twenty-nine projects were recognized. Four of those winners will go onto the national competition.

Statewide Engineering Excellence Awards

Gold Award for Original or Innovative Application of new or existing Techniques

  • GeoEngineers Inc., Frozen Soil Shoring for Tunnel the Union Pacific Railroad.

When grouting failed to stabilize the soils enough to jack a steel tunnel liner under the Union Pacific Rail Road tracks near The Dalles, Ore., soil freezing was identified as the practical solution. GeoEngineers designed a frozen soil arch shoring system to enable construction to proceed.

Gold Award for Future Value to the Engineering Profession

  • The Hoh Engineered Logjam Highway 101 Protection Project is the largest engineered logjam in the Pacific Northwest. The design represents a cost effective and sustainable means of roadway infrastructure protection.
The Edmonds mid-walkway and bulkhead improvement project in Edmonds, Wash., designed by Reid Middleton, Everett, changed the entire atmosphere of the Marine Life Sanctuary along in Puget Sound.

Gold Award for Social, Economic and Sustainable Design Consideration

  • Reid Middleton, Inc. Edmonds Mid-Waterfront Walkway and Bulkhead

The city of Edmonds accomplished a vision laid out in its 1991 comprehensive plan by with the Edmonds Mid-Waterfront Walkway and Bulkhead Replacement project, a necklace or waterfront parks linked by a nearly continuous walkway.

Gold Award for Complexity

  • Reid Middleton - University of Alaska, Anchorage Consortium Library. The new 126,000-sq.-ft. library has become an icon on campus known for its utilitarian structure.

Gold Award for Exceeding Owner Client Needs

  • The North Creek Storage Facility is designed to store 6 million gallons of sewage during storm periods.
