Satellite Transit System Really Moving
When it opened in 1969, Sea-Tac Airport's underground train
system to the North and South Satellite gates was only the
second in the United States. When a major upgrade is complete
in 2004, it will be one of the nicest.
The project includes the remodel of the six STS stations
in the main terminal and at the satellites. Ceilings are being
raised to allow for lighter, brighter areas that will feature
terrazzo flooring and lighter wall finishes. Glass walls in
main stations will allow waiting passengers to see trains
coming.
The underground trains themselves will also be replaced.
The system's current three, two-car trains will become three,
three-car trains running more frequently with doors that open
in both directions. The number of doors in all stations will
increase from four to six.
The train system will be complete by the end of this year,
said Larry Lanier, the Satellite Transit System's project
leader, and the station remodels will be complete by the end
of 2004.
Within the first year, the project's schedule was reduced
from 81 months to 61 months, said Lanier, and that 61-month
schedule will be beat by six months. The reduced schedule
saves the Port $3.6 million, he said.
