On the Horizon: More Vulcan Projects Slated

Plans for several more Vulcan projects are in the works. They include:

UW Medicine Lake Union

The University of Washington School of Medicine will move into the renovated Washington Natural Gas Building in August 2004. Formerly known as the "Blue Flame Building," the 105,000 sq. ft. structure will offer the UW space for its expanding biomedical research facilities, with a focus on cardiovascular diseases and women's issues.

MBT Architecture (Seattle) is the project's architect and Turner Construction is the general contractor.

2200 Westlake

Dubbed the "Gateway to South Lake Union," the 555,000-sq.-ft. 2200 Westlake project will feature a 126-room hotel, a flagship QFC grocery store, 270 condominiums, an approximately 12,000-sq.-ft. day spa and 40,000 sq. ft. of retail space.

CollinsWoerman is the architect and Turner is the general contractor. Construction is scheduled to start early next year with a completion date of spring 2005.

428 Westlake

This 88,000-sq.-ft., six-story office/biotech building starts construction this fall, with a scheduled completion date of fall 2004. CollinsWoerman is the project architect as well as the lead tenant. Sellen is the general contractor.

223 Yale

223 Yale is a 362,000-sq.-ft. mixed-use project with 169,000 sq. ft. of residential space, 43,000 sq. ft. of retail space, 150,000 sq. ft. of office space and parking to accommodate 496 cars. NBBJ is designing the building and will also relocate their headquarters to the building from Pioneer Square upon completion in winter 2005. The project, located on the full block at John/Thomas and Yale/Pontius, includes the adaptive reuse of the historic Richmond Laundry building.

Interurban Exchange IV and V

Construction on these two buildings is scheduled to start in the winter of 2006. The structures are designed to accommodate the lab components of biotech companies as well as administrative and general office needs. Both buildings are five stories tall and offer a combined total 279,000 sq. ft. They sit on a full block bordered by Terry and Harrison.
