OBC announces Award Winners
Wilsonville - The Oregon Building Congress (OBC) honors several key people annualy for their contributions to construction education and recruitment.
This year's winners are: Christie Plinski, Benson High School, Educator of the Year; Karen Natzel, Kennedy Communications, Congressperson of the Year; John Martin, Vocational Instructor of the Year; Jay Minor, Coral Construction, Contractor of the Year; and Ross Vroman, Skanska USA Building, Inc., Past President Award.
Plinski was honored for her work with OBC in creating a "school-within-a-school" at Benson to help guide students to careers in architecture, construction and engineering. For the past several years, Natzel has made significant contributions to OBC's marketing efforts. Martin was recognized for his transformative work with at-risk students, incarcerated teenagers at the Oregon Youth Authority's (OYA) MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility, and students with emotional problems at the OYA's RiverBend Facility. As a member of the Oregon-Columbia Chapter of the Associated General Contractors' union contracting group and the Laborers' union Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Minor gave critical support to OBC programs. Vroman was the OBC president in 2004. He and his company have made considerable financial contributions and volunteered many hours on behalf of OBC's sustainable building program.
The Oregon Building Congress focuses on construction-related programs in Oregon and Southwest Washington. These include the Construction Academy, the Green Building Initiative, and Summer Teacher Workshops. In addition, the organization publishes Building Futures, a magazine for students and teachers.
Walter Macy Wins Contract
Portland - Walker Macy has been selected by Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation Department to design Hockinson Community Park in Vancouver, Wash.
The undeveloped, 240-acre property is partially covered by wetlands. The new park will include the following features: 16 little league fields, 8 soccer fields, extreme sports area, picnic and group shelters, playgrounds, sports courts, shared-used trail network, interpretive project development, an off-leash area, a concession/press box building and a caretaker facility.
Also included in the team: KPFF, SERA, PBS Environmental, MGH, PAE, Kittleson & Associates, Pacific Water Resources, Architectural Cost Consultants, Barney & Worth, Grindline Skateparks, and artist Varerlie Otani.
Electricians Donate to Children's Charities

Portland - More than 450 business, union and legislative leaders turned out for the 15th Annual B.U.L.L Session Invitational Golf Tournament, Oregon's largest single-day golf charity event. The B.U.L.L. Session donates to nine different local children's charities. This year's total donation is expected to surpass last year's record $329,000. With this year's donation, the cumulative amount raised in the 15 years since B.U.L.L. Session's inception will approach the $2.5 million mark. For the second year, the B.U.L.L. Session invited children from the benefiting charities to participate in the tournament. Together with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 48, NECA has been a title sponsor of the B.U.L.L. Session for the past thirteen years.
